Iron Man 3: THE REVIEW

Ok I wasn’t going to post this, but 1) I really wanted to write this and share it and 2) I need more original content on my blog, so…

My rating of this movie, on a scale of 1/10, is a 4. I definitely would NOT watch it again. And that makes me sad. I had high hopes for this movie. I just expected it to be good. The first two Iron Man movies were amazing and are still on my list of re-watchable movies. This one? Not so much.

You see, there are two kinds of action movies: Action Movies, and Movies with Action. Movies with Action are usually really good. Take Skyfall for instance. That was a great movie. There was a ton of action and explosions, but for good reason. There was an underlying plot, there was a reason for the action, and it didn’t feel too over the top. Then there are Action Movies. These are the movies that really don’t require a plot. They’re big budget and full of so much action and explosions that everybody should already be dead.

The problem with Iron Man 3 is that it ended up being an Action Movie when it should have been a Movie with Action like the first 2 movies.

The plot was so… scattered. Everything in the movie happened so fast, viewpoints and plotpoints changed rapidly, and everything just seem rushed and unconnected. It was also confusing at times. “Why are these events even happening?” I would often wonder.

I’m not an avid Marvel fan, so I don’t know much about the comics, but I should just mention real fast here: If you are expecting any developments with Iron Patriot, be very disappointed. The movie would have been almost exactly the same without it.

The dialogue was a plus, in a way. The snarky banter was really well written and enjoyable. Shane Black, one of the screenwriters, also worked on Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, one of my favorite movies, which also happens to star Robert Downy Jr. (You should really go watch it!) I could see his style of characterization shine through; unfortunately, a lot of the snarky dialogue came out of nowhere, causing a huge amount of mood whiplash throughout the movie. One second a guy is getting shot, the next Tony gives off a cheesy one-liner and the audience laughs. And then the very next moment something explodes. It’s like everything is being sandwiched in the wrong order.

More on characterization, I thought the characters themselves were handled well; it’s just the plot and its speed that pulls them back. Tony’s anxiety attacks are very moving, but they feel tacked on when a short minute later something exciting happens somewhere else. Pepper started off looking like she’d have a large part in the movie, but in the end she’s only another damsel in distress. She does get some action sequences, but she really had no important part in the scheme of things except being Tony’s significant other. She had so much potential this time, too!

Speaking of women, there was a strangely hefty amount of girls in bikinis in this movie. I know there usually is in Iron Man movies, Tony being a playboy and all, but in this one there REALLY was no need. At all. Maybe in like, ONE flashback, but that’s it. It’s really awkward, because you know they’re only there for the guys.

AND ANOTHER THING that really pissed me off. The violence in this movie was off the charts. Now, I know violence is a given. You need it for the action part of “action movie”. But this time it was… unsettling. Sure there were explosions, but there were also a very large amount of guns. And the worst part is that they were used almost apathetically. Mooks and citizens alike are easily taken down by bullets in this one. There were also a ton of really hurtful looking moves. Due to the Extremis injections, some humans can now regenerate, meaning getting shot or losing a limb won’t do anything because they can just fix themselves. So at the end part of the movie, any mook on the bad side is assumed to have this ability. The only way to kill these people is to totally destroy them. Therefore, there was a lot of bodily harm that the movie could get away with because “oh, that guy got shot right through the stomach, but he COULD technically regenerate”, or “it doesn’t even matter because he wasn’t human anymore”. That’s just… scary.

In addition to the new high level of violence, the whole terrorist thing was also unsettling. They really went all out with nationalism in this one. The bad guy’s a terrorist who mocks the Great United States of America!!! and the president plays too much of a part in the film. It’s just too close to things going on today. Can’t we go to a movie and NOT be reminded about how shitty the world is right now? The new Star Trek movie is doing the whole terrorist thing too, but at least that takes place in a spacey future. This is plain-old, modern day “scary middle-eastern” terrorism. And it’s just… sad.

So, with gun violence, terrorism, scantily-clad women, and some pretty high-level swearwords, this movie was surprisingly violent for a Marvel movie. Marvel knows these superhero movies are going to be watched by kids, no matter what rating they get. I’m 17 and even I cringed at some of the stuff I saw.

All in all, I was really disappointed in Iron Man 3. I had high hopes, and they were dashed!

So. If you’re a person who loves mindless violence and snarky banter, go ahead and watch it. If you’re looking for something more in a movie, I would recommend sitting at home watching Netflix.
